Smith, 28, played in Puerto Rico’s top division this summer for the Indios de Mayaguez, posting averages of 15.3 points, 6.1 rebounds, 5.1 assists, while shooting .368 (39-106) from three-point range in 34 games played. The 6-foot-7 guard/forward brings a winning track record to Maccabi Bazan Haifa, having won championships for PBC Lukoil Akademik Sophia in Bulgaria’s top division (2007), the Melbourne South Dragons in Australia’s top division (2009), and the Marinos de Anzoategui in Venezuela’s top division (2011).
Smith played last season for Fuerza Regia Monterrey in Mexico alongside current Maccabi Bazan Haifa player Jeremis Smith, appearing in 36 games averaging 15.2 points, 7.4 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 2.7 steals (first in the league), 1.0 blocks, while shooting .598 from the field and .353 from beyond the arc. Donta Smith and Jeremis Smith were also teammates in Venezuela for Marinos de Anzoategui in 2011.
Smith, a native of Lexington, Kentucky, played two seasons for Southeastern Illinois College from 2002-2004, finishing his collegiate career as the school's all-time leading scorer (1,433 points), and recorded 20.8 PPG, 6.3 RPG and 3.1 APG in 69 games. After his sophomore season, Smith was selected 34th overall in the second round of the 2004 NBA Draft by the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks. Smith played two seasons for the Hawks from 2004-2006.
